Medical and Aerospace Manufacturing
Medical Manufacturing is a large industry with several different sectors from medical reconstructive devices such as hip replacements to surgical instruments like surgical robots that surgeons use in state of the art healthcare facilities. Manufacturing for the healthcare industry poses great challenges in the coatings of the devices and components, and the accuracies with which titanium must be regularly machined. Medical manufacturing and aerospace manufacturing have a lot of similarities in their challenges and the precision that the components and systems be manufactured. Both industries require strict quality management systems that support the level of precision and quality that are vital to success of a system in either industry. Precision and quality rule manufacturing in both the medical and aerospace industries since lives are on the line in both industries.
Medical manufacturing utilizes much more micromachining and smaller components in general than the aerospace industry usually requires while the aerospace industry has a much stricter standards on the heat treatment of the materials of components. The aerospace industry has its own organization, Nadcap (formerly National Aerospace and Defense Contractors Accreditation Program), that regulates the heat treatment standards and enforces the compliance with those high standards. Both of these industries however do utilize exotic materials in the manufacture of their components. While both of the industries have several differences, they can both learn from one another in order to raise the standards of both for better manufacturing practices in both.
Marples Gears has worked with both the aerospace and medical industries through its 50+ years experience in manufacturing and is very familiar with machining exotic materials, high precision and strict standards of both industries. Marples Gears management is well-acquainted with the standards of these industries. If your next project requires these high standards, please email your drawing to info@marplesgearsinc.com.
